It’s a Fight, Code or Not Code: Microsoft PowerApps

I started my career as a developer after completing my graduation. I was successfully trained and groomed to develop a few projects using Microsoft’s .Net technology. Most of the time I had always been busy writing code. But soon I observed a career shift towards Microsoft tools like Dynamics, SharePoint. Soon I found myself customizing these tools in the cloud. Yes, that’s correct it was Office 365. To anyone who doesn’t know what Office 365 is, it is a tool from Microsoft which directly competes with other collaboration tools like Gsuite, Salesforce, Zoho, etc.

With embracing low code development tools, one thing I realized was that day by day I had started writing less and less code. How did it benefit my user, my end client?

Before I answer that let’s see what my client’s challenges were really like?

  1. The client had to wait longer and longerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr for every release.
  2. Small projects turned out into large projects which were more suitable for waterfall model project development.
  3. Since the usual user was not involved actively in the development, many times a lot of features were discarded later. Sometimes even the entire application 😦
  4. Difficult to incorporate changes. All enhancements required additional effort ( a lot)

Low code development tools were able to solve these problems to a large extent. The very reason why a Low code development tool like Salesforce has risen.

But with the rapidly changing technologies, we have entered an era of No-Code tools. What exactly is the difference between Low Code and No Code?

For this let’s understand what popularised Wix as a No code website developer brand?

It allows users to create HTML5 websites and mobile sites through the use of online drag and drop tools. Prior to Wix how a small company would have got its website developed?

It would need the following human resources:

  1. Graphic designers
  2. Creative designers
  3. User experience specialists
  4. Front-end web developers
  5. Back-end web developers
  6. Search engine optimizers
  7. Branding experts

This tool empowered companies to save a lot of time and money.

But what if we had like to extend the existing features? So they are customizations, isn’t it? Yes, that’s possible. So it also has some part of Low Code.

When we talk about Wix, this tool is meant for public-facing websites. But isn’t there a need for designing similar apps that run in the cloud within an organization?

This is where Microsoft’s tool Microsoft PowerApps comes out of the picture. This is also a low code development platform but precisely for the intranet. Imagine empowering managers to solve their business problems by quickly creating apps.

Now let’s see how the world had welcomed this tool in the past few years?

Following is the proof from Gartner that PowerApps has already become a leader in Magic Quadrant.

And it’s growing!

Now it’s our choice if we leverage this No-Code platform today which provides features like:

  1. Drag and Drop facility for designing Apps.
  2. Excel-like formulas.
  3. Easily Integrates with external systems
  4. Artificial Intelligence bundled
  5. Powerful automation tool Microsoft Automate for designing workflows using drag and drop
  6. Publishing apps that run on web, mobile, tablet.
  7. Running on platforms like Windows, IOS, Android, etc
